The timestamps people convert come out of production logs, audit trails and incident timelines. This page makes no request while you use it: no database, no logs, no analytics, no URL, no local storage.

What Unix time does not have

Leap seconds.

A Unix timestamp counts non-leap seconds, so during a leap second the counter repeats a value. 2016-12-31T23:59:60Z is a real instant this representation cannot hold, so it is rejected rather than quietly moved to :59.

Daylight saving.

A timestamp is an instant; DST only changes how it is written in a named zone. An input with no offset is read in the zone above — never in the server’s. A local time that never happened shifts forward; one that happened twice resolves to the earlier instant.

From the command line

One command, identical on every box — date is not always installed and its flags differ between GNU and BSD. A bare request answers with the current Unix time in seconds; a piped body is converted. Scripts should always pass ?in=, because without it the digit count decides between seconds and milliseconds.
